A father plans the funeral of his 10-year-old son with cancer

Abby’s body can’t take it anymore after a 6-year battle with cancer. Doctors told her family that there was nothing else they could do and that they had to say goodbye. Abby opened her eyes and whispered seven words that left her family – and her doctors – stunned as they stood around her for the last time…

The life story of Abe Forko is a great example of how miracles can happen.

This adorable ten-year-old had a difficult childhood. At the age of four she was diagnosed with leukemia and doctors gave her a 20 percent chance of survival. The news broke her parents’ hearts, but they knew their daughter was a fighter and they didn’t stop fighting for her life.

We were devastated,” said Patti Forko, Abby’s mother. “We were told she was going to die, and there wasn’t much of a chance.”

Abby has been through a lot. Along with chemotherapy, radiation, and other drug trials, she had a bone marrow transplant.

“We kept her surrounded by emotions because we knew we could lose her at any moment,” explains Patti. “There were times when we weren’t sure if she would; she had so many illnesses that could have killed her.” We can only watch her struggle and hope for the best.”

Abby felt better after a series of treatments. She also cycled, played soccer and went to school every day. A year later, however, the malignancy returned. This time she was much stronger than the first time. Abby’s ability to walk suddenly diminished.

“While the initial diagnosis was difficult, this diagnosis put our whole being on the line,” Patty said. “She became completely immobile and every movement hurt her.”

The young woman had to undergo another bone marrow transplant, but this time her body rejected the donor’s bone marrow and was diagnosed with Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), a condition that can develop after allogeneic donation. In GvHD, the recipient’s body is seen as foreign and attacked by the transplanted bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells. Abby was on dialysis for her kidney failure.

Her parents were told there was nothing she could do and it was time to let their daughter go.

“Doctors advised her to let her go because she was barely awake for an hour a day,” Patty said. “We have started preparing our other daughters for their deaths,” the mother says.

Abby was placed in foster care and her surviving parents were tasked with organizing her funeral.

Just as everyone gathered around her to say goodbye, Abby opened her eyes and said something that left everyone speechless.

Patty said, “She told us, ‘I have a lot to do.'”

She said, “We couldn’t believe it, she started walking and within days, weeks, months she got stronger. It’s nothing short of a miracle.”

There is no medical explanation for my father’s speedy recovery. The doctors were confused. They had no answers and Abby’s parents didn’t care; They just wanted their daughter to live.

“We helped her get hospice care at home. When we retired, she got better herself and we took the treatments, so she didn’t take a lot of medication,” said Jacob Whistler, MD, a pediatric hematologist and oncologist.

“I’ve done it up and down, but if you keep going in that direction, we’ll all look like fools!” he added. “You have defied all odds.”

No one knows what the future holds, but for now Abby is healthy and prosperous. She is in remission and on intravenous steroids twice a day.

“We’ve watched her die and come back to life,” Patty said. “Now is the time to think about the future.”
