The official blog of Google has announced plans for a smart lens designed for diabetics. The prototype they have been testing has a tiny wireless chip with a miniaturized glucose sensor. There are two layers built into these chips.

Google is also studying how various body fluids may be used to measure glucose levels. Monitors that are used today relay on tears, but alternatives are needed as people cannot often cry on command.

The announcement stated the level of glucose in the body is recorded by the sensor. This sensor signals a warning to the user in the form of an LED light when their glucose levels reach a certain limit. The sensor is designed to look like specks of glitter.

Experts in the field are helping Google as the company works with the FDA to turn the prototypes into real products for the marketplace. The goal of Google is to have their partners use their technology and develop an app to provide glucose measurements to the user and their doctor.

A similar prototype was developed my Microsoft, but it never reached the market. This is an opportunity for Google to bring their technology to the market, if they can find the right partners.
